World Map

"Secunda etas mundi – Folium XIII“

This early map of the Old World is a very fine and important woodcut after Ptolemy. The map is surrounded by a border with twelve wind heads, at three of its corners, the map is supported by the three sons of Moses, Ham, Sem and Japhet. The seven panels on the left represent horrible creatures and beings that were thought to inhabit the far off parts of the earth (after Pliny).

Beautiful woodcut by Michael Wohlgemut and Wilhelm Pleyenwurff, from the first edition of the Nuremberg Chronicle. Verso text in Latin and fourteen small woodcut illustrations. Editor Hartmann Schedel, published by Anton Koberger, Nuremberg 1493.

Strong print on heavy paper, wide margins, at the bottom middle some small worm holes. Verso along the centre fold glue remnants from a previous reinforcement. Overall in very good condition. Rare!
