Map of the World

"Orbis Terrae Compendiosa Descriptio / Quam ex Magna Universali Gerardi Mercatoris Domino Richardo Gartho, Geographic ac ceterarum bonarum artium amatori ac fautori summo, in veteris amicitic ac familiaritatis memoria Rumoldus Mercator fieri curabat A°. M. D. LXXXVII".

World in two hemispheres, surrounded by a strapwork border. With an armillary sphere and an elaborate compass rose between the two hemispheres. Compiled by Rumold Mercator after Gerhard Mercator's world map of 1569. First published in an edition of Strabo's 'Geographia', Geneva 1587, and in an Mercator-Atlas, Duisburg 1595.

Coloured copper engraving by Gerhard and Rumold Mercator, published by Rumold Mercator, Duisburg 1595, 36 x 52,3 cm.

Very good impression, nice and skilfully worked out colouring. Left and right margins and lower left and right corners replaced - partly affecting the map or the text, in the middle of the text a part of it is missing, otherwise good condition.

Rare first edition from the Mercator-Atlas published in 1595, with Latin text below.
