Old World Swallowtail & Scarce Swallowtail
Depicted are two butterflies, the Old World swallowtail (Papilio machaon), and the Scarce swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius), both with their caterpillars. Below the handwritten description "Fig. 1. Pap. Eq. Ach. Machaon a. die Raupe. Fig. 2. Pap. Podalirius b. die Raupe."
Original watercolour painting by Eugen Johann Christoph Esper (1742-1810). A fine preliminary drawing for his book “Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur” published by Walther, Erlangen, and Weigel, Leipzig 1777-1839.
