Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915)

A view of the historic Kannonzaki lighthouse on Cape Kannon, on Miura Peninsula (Kanagawa Prefecture). Built in the very early Meiji period, in 1868/69, it was Japan's first modern lighthouse.

Title: Kannonzaki (aka Kannon misaki - Cape Kannon)

Series: Nihon meishô zue (Views of the Famous Sights of Japan)

Seal: Kiyochika

Publisher: Matsuki Heikichi (Daihei, Daikokuya), Tokyo

Date: Meiji 30 (1897), February

Size: Vertical Ôban, 33,9 x 22 cm (image)

Excellent impression and colours, with nicely visible wood grain. Retains old album backing. Very good condition. Unidentified red (collector’s?) seals in and alongside the text cartouche.
Numbered 81 in the lower left margin, but since only 28 woodblock prints were published in this series, it is almost certainly a twist of the number 18 here. Cf. Santa Barbara Museum of Art 1986.31.103; Lavenberg Collection # 877.
