Ohara Koson (1877-1945)
A cawing crow on a snowy willow branch against a grey sky
Publisher: Matsuki Heikichi (Daikokuya), Tokyo
Date: c. 1910-20
Original Japanese colour woodblock print. Size: Vertical Ôtanzaku (Mitsugiriban), 34.3 x 18.8 cm (overall)
Excellent impression and colours, with well visible wood-grain. With gofun white and lustre printing in the plumage of the crow. Paper a little bit age-toned, very narrow mat stain. Verso in parts slightly stained, in top margin verso a handwritten pencil note and a narrow glue trace from previous attachment. Top margin a little uneven. Overall very good condition.
Cf. Reigle Newland/Perrée/Schaap, Crows, Cranes and Camellias, The natural world of Ohara Koson 1877-1945, Leiden/Boston 2010, p. 272, cat. No. 48, p. 180, K5.7 (?). There are, however, a number of small differences in printing blocks. A possible explanation could be that the publisher kept a second set of blocks for this popular print. So far, no other recorded example for exactly this variant.
