Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)

A late summer night scene on the verandah of an inn at Shinagawa. Behind the shôji door to the left the silhouette of a courtesan, to the right the seated figure of a shamisen player. The remnants of a meal on the Tatami mats hint at an – now invisible – male party guest. The full moon illuminates the serene view of Edo bay.
