Takahashi Shôtei (Kakei, Hiroaki) (1871-1945)
An evening scene – the full moon is shining over the village of Nagakubo on the Kisokaidô highway (also known as Nakasendô) leading from Edo to Kyoto. On the bridge travellers are crossing the Yoda River.
Title: Kisoji Nagakubo (Nagakubo on the Kiso Road)
Seal: Kakei
Publisher: (Watanabe, Tokyo)
Date: 1909-23
Size: Horizontal Ôtanzaku (Mitsugiri-ban), 16,9 x 38,2 cm (overall)
Excellent impression and colours. Slight traces of creasing (smoothed) in bottom right corner. Overall very nice condition. Verso in bottom faintly visible the stamp with Watanabe's original pre-quake catalogue number "No. 323".
Very rare. Printed before the Kantô earthquake of 1923, in which the printing blocks were destroyed. It is now generally accepted, based on the research of Marc Kahn, that a number of early and rare woodblock prints bearing the „Kakei“ seal, and published by Watanabe before 1923, were actually designed by Takahashi Shôtei (Hiroaki), using yet another gô (artist’s name).
Shotei.com No. M-143. Not listed in Shimizu.
