Ohara Koson (1877-1945)

A crow cawing on a snowy willow branch against a grey sky.

Signature: Koson. Seal: Koson

Publisher: Matsuki Heikichi (Daikokuya), Tokyo

Date: c. 1910

Original Japanese colour woodblock print. Size: Vertical Ôtanzaku (Mitsugiriban), 36 x 19,3 cm (overall)

Excellent impression and colours, with well visible wood-grain. With gofun white and lustre printing in the crow’s plumage. Retains the unprinted paper margins on top and left sides. Paper slightly age-toned. Upper margin a little unevenly trimmed and soiled, with two small thinner areas, restored. Verso in top margin a pencil written name and number and along the top remnant from removed glue. Overall very good condition.

A very rare version of this popular image of the crow in the snow. This variant is not contained in the book by Reigle Newland/Perrée/Schaap, Crows, Cranes and Camellias! (compare pp. 72 and 180). So far only traced in the collection "Japanische Kleinkunst", Elberfeld, n.d. (around 1900), SLUB Dresden, call number 92054306 (No. 4).
