Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) (1786-1865)

Three elegant beauties enjoying the evening cool on a terrace over the Sumida river in Ryôgoku, Edo. Numerous pleasure boats are cruising on the river, on the left Ryôgoku bridge is partly visible.

Title: Ryôgoku suzumi no yakei (Enjoying the cool breeze in Ryogoku, a night view)

Signature: Kunisada aratame nidai Toyokuni ga (Kunisada, his name changing to Toyokuni II)

Publisher: Sen, Edo (Marks U272)

Censor: Fukatsu Ihei

Date: 1842-46

Size: Ôban triptych, c. 35.5 x 72.5 cm (overall)

Excellent impression. Colours partly faded, but overall still good and harmonious. Slightly trimmed, unbacked separate sheets. Unobtrusive horizontal centrefolds, smoothed. Narrow mat stain in parts. A few light stains, in the left sheet a wormhole in the river, restored. Paper a little bit wavy. Overall still very good condition.
A very rare triptych. So far only one other copy located in the Sumida Bunkazai Database, No 541 (collection of the Sumida Heritage Museum).
