Utagawa Yoshitaki (1841-1899)

A stage scene from the drama "Keisei Ama no Hagoromo" (The Courtesan and the Heavenly Feather Robe), performed on the stage of the Naka theatre in Osaka in the 8th month of 1862; in the stage background bamboo growing under a big old pine tree.

The performers and their roles from right:

  1. Jitsukawa Ensaburô I as Shôgun Yoshihisa kô (sic)
  2. Onoe Tamizo II as Kitagawa Sôzaemon, performing the Shakkyô dance with his sword drawn
  3. Fujikawa Tomokichi III as the lady Nyôbô Shirotae, beating the drum
  4. Nakamura Jakuemon as Yamana Sôzen

Excellent deluxe impression, excellent colours, with relief printing, lustre printing and metallic pigments (oxidized). The four sheets joined, old album backing. Minimal soiling at bottom. Overall very nice condition.
A rare complete Kamigata set by the artist as a young man. Illustrated in Hiroko Kitagawa (ed.), Two Albums of Osaka Actor Prints in Kansai Library, Osaka 2006, No. 72. Also Hankyu Bunka Coll. 中Y318-01/02/03/04.
