Tsukioka Kôgyo (1869-1927) attr.
Blooming white and white-veined violet irises against a deep blue ground with stylised silver waves.
As usual without signature and seal.
Publisher: (Matsuki Heikichi, Daikokuya, Tokyo)
Date: Ca. 1890-1910
Size: Shikishiban, 24 x 25 cm (overall)
Excellent impression, colours and condition. The waves printed with silver mica, fine mother-of-pearl-mica speckles all over the sheet. Unbacked and untrimmed. Rare.
Kôgyo created some designs for Daikokuya around 1900 in the square shikishi format, mostly in a delicate, painterly style, but also some in the stylized Rimpa (or Rinpa) manner. This beautiful and rare print is also very close to Art Nouveau. It is always unsigned, the attribution to Kôgyo according to the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, which owns an enormous collection of works by Kôgyo (Perrée Collection).
