Ryûsai Shigeharu (1803-1853)

The famous sashi-kago (lifting the palanquin) scene from the Kabuki play “Ashiya Dôman oûchi kagami“:Two strong yakko (foot-soldiers) are lifting the palanquin (kago) with Kuzunoha, the fox woman. On top of the scene fire-flames are darting in the night sky, a sign of the presence of fox demons.

The actors and their roles: Nakamura Utaemon II as Yakko Yakanbei (right), Arashi Rikan II as Yakko Yokanbei (left), and Sawamura Kunitaro II as Kuzunoha in her travelling dress (middle sheet). This performance was staged in 1830 in the Kado theatre in Osaka.
