Istanbul - Constantinople

Bird's-eye-view of Istanbul, Constantinople, between the Sea of Marmara and the Golden Horn, seen from the east. The Topkapi palace at the headland in the foreground, behind it the Hagia Sophia and the city in general. Sailing boats around the coast. In the lower part twelve medallions showing portraits of the rulers of the Ottoman Empire, in the centre Sultan Salim 3rd on horseback with accompanying Janissaries.

Handcoloured copper engraving by Braun & Hogenberg from 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', Cologne 1572/1575, vol. I / 51, 33 x 48 cm (plate size). 2nd edition with the portrait of Murad III.
